Brothers Community Sports Development Program

Applications NOW OPEN

60 x $1,000 SPORTS EQUIPMENT GRANTS

Sporting clubs in Cairns are set to receive a potentially life saving cash injection thanks to Brothers Leagues Club Cairns. Continuing their strident efforts towards cultural and community development, the club has announced the 2010 Round of the Brothers Community Sports Development Program is now open for applications. For the second year, the program will see a massive $60,000 in equipment grants distributed to promote health and well being throughout the greater Cairns community.

Upholding the twin ideals of health and community engagement, sixty $1000 grants will be made available to the full gamut of sporting groups, schools and community organisations undertaking regular sporting activity.

Noting a marked increase in requests for funding in recent times and in the wake of the economic downturn, General Manager Mono Gomez reveals that Brothers Community Sports Development Program is a fitting and positive response to a community in need. "Sport promotes healthy living, it's a social activity that keeps kids off the streets by giving them something to do and that is very much what we are all about,” he says. “It's tough times at the moment and a lot of parents don't have the money to help the kids participate in sports so this is just another way of easing that burden on families. We decided to go one further last year and open it up to 60 organisations; to give as many groups as possible an opportunity to receive a $1,000 towards purchasing sporting equipment. And it's not just junior kids sporting clubs, it is open to any community group that conducts a regular sporting activity which promotes healthy living.”

He says the enormous response to the launch of the program last year was partly due to the simplicity of the grant process, which was designed to be fast and simple to ensure a broad spectrum of applicants. “The idea of applying for a grant can be very intimidating to a lot of people but we really want the community to get in and have a go so we’ve created an easy submission process and encourage people to start applying now."

Since first opening its doors in 1974, Brothers Leagues Club has been a potent and powerful force in fundraising for sporting endeavours in the locality, with the Community Sports Development Program a logical next step in their continued nurturing of sporting endeavour. "It's what community clubs are about," says Gomez, "We are about promoting healthy lifestyles and sport in the community. It is our charter to promote and foster not only rugby league but all sport in the community."
